Private File Transfer

Send files directly from your device to another, with no upload and no account. The two devices connect to each other and the files never touch our servers.

How to use Private File Transfer

  1. Choose the files you want to send, then press Create link.
  2. Send the link (or let the other person scan its QR code). They open it on their device and get a short reply code.
  3. Paste the reply code back here and press Connect. The files start sending straight away: keep both pages open until they finish.

Common uses

About this tool

Normal file-sharing sites upload your file to a server and give the other person a download link. This tool uses WebRTC, the same browser technology used for video calls, to open an encrypted connection between the two devices. Because the connection is direct, your files are never stored on a server.

A small public service called a STUN server (we use Cloudflare's) helps the devices discover how to reach each other. It sees the devices' network addresses, but never the files or the connection codes. WebRTC data is encrypted in transit with DTLS.

Both people need to keep their browser tab open during the transfer, and received files are held in memory until you download them, so very large files (several gigabytes) work best on a computer. Some strict firewalls and mobile networks block direct connections: if the connection fails, try a different network.

Privacy. Files go directly between the two devices. We never receive them.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The files travel directly between the two devices over an encrypted connection. We do not receive or store them.

Is there a file size limit?

We set no limit. The practical limit is the memory of the receiving device, because the file is assembled in memory before you download it.

Why do I have to send a reply code back?

There is no server to introduce the two devices, so they exchange two short codes themselves. That is also what keeps the transfer private.

Does the other person need an account or app?

No. They only need a modern browser and the link.

What does the STUN server see?

It sees the network address of each device, the same information any website sees when you visit it. It never sees your files or the codes.

Why did my connection fail?

Some corporate firewalls, VPNs and mobile networks block direct connections. Try another network, switch off the VPN, or use the same Wi-Fi.

Is it end-to-end encrypted?

Yes. WebRTC data channels are encrypted between the two devices, and no server in between can read the data.
