How to use Hash Generator (MD5, SHA)
- Type or paste your text.
- Read the MD5 and SHA hashes instantly.
- Copy the hash you need.
Common uses
- Verifying checksums of text values.
- Comparing data without sharing it.
- Generating test fingerprints for development.
About this tool
Compute MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes of any text. The SHA algorithms use your browser's Web Crypto API. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for checksums but are no longer considered secure for passwords or signatures; prefer SHA-256 or stronger for security work.
Worked example
The SHA-256 hash of abc is ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad. Change one letter of the input and every digit of the output changes. Hashes are one-way: you cannot recover the text from the hash.
Common problems and fixes
- My hash differs from another tool.
- Check for a hidden trailing newline or different line endings. A single extra character changes the entire hash.
- Can I use MD5 or SHA-1 for passwords?
- No. They are fast and broken for security. Use a purpose-built password hashing function on the server.
- Hashing a file instead of text.
- This tool hashes the text you type. To check a downloaded file, compare against a file-hashing tool.

Frequently asked questions
Is MD5 secure?
No. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security uses such as signatures; use SHA-256 or stronger.
Can a hash be reversed?
Hashes are one-way, but weak or common inputs can be guessed with lookup tables, so never rely on a plain hash to protect passwords.
Can I hash a file?
This tool hashes text typed or pasted into it, not files.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs inside your browser on your own device, so your files and text are never sent anywhere.
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers. Very large files may be slow on older phones.
